Why Multilingual SDS Translation is a Legal Requirement

European chemical safety legislation leaves no room for interpretation: every substance or mixture that meets the criteria of Art. 31(1) REACH (classified as hazardous, PBT/vPvB, or included in the Candidate List SVHC) must be accompanied by a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) written in the official language of that country. Beyond the Translation of H and P Phrases: Complete Localization of the SDS

A common mistake is to consider SDS translation as a simple linguistic exercise. In reality, generating a compliant SDS for another country requires complete localization that goes far beyond the translation of H phrases (hazard statements) and P phrases (precautionary statements). Section 1: Identification of the Substance/Mixture and the Supplier

The emergency telephone number must be that of the country of destination. Section 2: Hazard Identification

Section 3: Composition/Ingredient Information

The chemical names of substances must be reported according to the official nomenclature in the target language. CAS, EC, and REACH registration numbers remain unchanged, but IUPAC names and common synonyms must correspond to the accepted terminology in the target country.

Section 8: Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

This is one of the sections that requires the most in-depth localization. Occupational exposure limit (OEL) values vary significantly from country to country:

• Italy — Limit values based on Legislative Decree 81/2008 Annex XXXVIII, which transposes the European Directives on chemical agents

This section requires the citation of specific national legislation applicable in the country of destination.
